Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis literally meaning “porous bones”, is a chronic progressive disease which troubles a significant number odf the population.  It is characterised by:

Ø  Low bone mass

Ø  Micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue

Ø  Bone becomes fragile

Ø  Increase risk of breaks, wrist, spine & hip

Ø  Affects the whole skeleton

Ø  Affects 1 in 3 women over the age of 50

Ø  Affects 1 in 12 men over the age of 50

Ø  3 million people in the UK suffer the disease

Ø  Each year in UK

o    70,000 hip fractures

o    50,000 wrist fractures

o    120,000 spinal fractures

Risk

Natural bone loss occurs as we get older, however there are additional factors involved which increase the risk of developing this silent chronic disease.  Some risk factors are shown in the table to the left.

 

Testing for Osteoporosis

The traditional way to diagnose osteoporosis is by a bone density scan.  However knowing who fast bone losers are is key to preventative treatment and the NTx test available at our clinic is highly predictive for the onset of osteoporosis.

 

Sample requirement

Only a small urine sample is requires and results are available in about 10 working days.
